- Feel super awkward. You’re about to ask someone who just agreed to meet with you if they’re willing to invite a whole camera crew into their home. So fun.
- Practice what you’re going to say over and over again with your companion.
- Call the person you are teaching. (This is just NOT a conversation for a text. Plus, at the beginning of my mission, our phones couldn’t text. Yeah, it was ten years ago.)
- Blurt out, “Hi (insert the name of who you were speaking to)! When we come to our appointment, would it be okay if a small camera crew came also? They’re working on a training video for missionaries and want to film our appointment.”
- Pray really really hard, cross your fingers, and hold your breath to hear the response.
- Respond with one of the following:
- “Thank you for considering it. I totally understand that you’re not comfortable with that. We’ll still be at the appointment, but without the cameras.”
- “Oh great! Thank you so much! Oh and… the camera crew will be there 30 minutes early to set up. And will take time after to take down.” Yes, the appointment just doubled in length. Cringe a little bit and cross your fingers again.
- Hang up, take a deep breath, and pray that when you show up, they will actually be there. And that they won’t kill you when they realize the phrase “small camera crew” is relative.
Bless those people who said yes. They were so patient with us and all that filming entailed. Love them forever.
